THE 10 ELEMENTS OF HUMANISING CARTOGRAPHY

The 10 Elements of Humanising Cartography introduced by ECRC Malaysia is a conceptual framework that redefines the way we understand and interpret places by placing people and their lived experiences at the heart of cartographic inquiry. Moving beyond the conventional representation of geographic space, the framework recognises that every place is shaped not only by its physical landscape but also by the people who inhabit it, the lives they lead, the cultures they preserve, the memories they carry, the emotions they experience and the identities they develop through their relationship with place.

Through ten interconnected elements consisting People, Life, Culture, Memory, Emotion, Identity, Movement, Livelihood, Change and Meaning, Humanising Cartography seeks to reveal the deeper human dimensions embedded within landscapes and maps. It provides a holistic perspective for understanding how places are lived, remembered, experienced, transformed and given meaning over time.

Developed as part of ECRC Malaysia’s approach to human-centred cartographic thinking, the framework positions cartography not merely as the representation of where things are, but as a means of understanding who is there, how they live, what they remember, what they feel, who they become, how they move, how they sustain their lives, how places change and what those places ultimately mean to them.

In this sense, Humanising Cartography connects geography with human experience by transforming the map from a representation of space into a deeper interpretation of place, people and lived reality.
