CARTOHISTORIC BY ECRC MALAYSIA

CARTOHISTORIC is a flagship research brand of Etiquity Cartographic Research Centre (ECRC Malaysia) dedicated to exploring historical places, events, landscapes and spatial transformations through cartographic and geospatial evidence. It represents ECRC Malaysia’s research approach in using historical maps, plans, charts, atlases, archival records and other cartographic sources to investigate how places evolved and how historical events unfolded within geographical space. 

Through CARTOHISTORIC, ECRC Malaysia examines the relationship between maps, places, events, people, landscapes and time using cartographic evidence to trace the historical identity and transformation of particular locations. The research may focus on historical settlements, waterways, transportation networks, boundaries, infrastructure, cultural landscapes, industrial and mining sites as well as historical events that influenced the identity and transformation of places over time. 

Rather than viewing historical maps merely as illustrations of the past, CARTOHISTORIC approaches them as spatial and historical evidence that can reveal where places existed, how landscapes were organised, how territories changed and where significant events occurred. By comparing cartographic sources across different periods with present-day spatial information, ECRC Malaysia seeks to reconstruct lost landscapes, trace changes in places and provide a deeper understanding of historical events through their geographical context.

In essence, CARTOHISTORIC is the research identity of ECRC Malaysia for exploring places and events through cartography, connecting historical evidence with space, time and human experience.
